WHAT EXPECT

Did you know that not far from Luxor, there are two super cool Ancient Egyptian sites that most people don’t visit? Abydos and Dendera are like hidden gems waiting to be explored!

Exploring the Temples of Abydos

It’s a really important place in Ancient Egypt with lots of history. It was a special city where the earliest Egyptian kings were buried, and later on, it became a place where people went to worship Osiris, a powerful god. Some of the highlights at Abydos include:

– Temple of Seti I:

The Temple of Seti I is an ancient marvel dedicated to the pharaoh Seti I. It features intricate carvings and hieroglyphics depicting Egyptian gods and pharaohs. Notable features include the Abydos King List and a hall with pillars adorned with reliefs. Visitors can explore chambers showcasing ancient religious practices and beliefs. This temple is a must-see destination for those interested in Egyptian history.

– Temple of Ramses II:

This temple is more colorful and newer than the Temple of Seti I. There’s even a small temple for Queen Nefertari!

– Osireion Bath:

Check out the cool Osireion Bath! It’s a super neat building that was built on top of some ancient water springs underground. You can find it behind the Temple of Seti I, about 18 meters below ground. If you go on the tour, you can check out the site and maybe even learn about some awesome rulers from back in the day. (Optional)

Uncovering the Mysteries of Dendera

Dendera is a really old place in Egypt that’s been kept in really good shape. It’s like a big-time machine that’s about 40,000 square meters big and has a big wall made of mudbricks around it. There are some awesome things to check out at Dendera, like:

– Temple of Hathor:

It is an ancient building dedicated to the goddess of love, beauty, music, and joy. It dates back to the Ptolemaic period and is adorned with carvings and pictures depicting myths and religion. Inside, visitors can see impressive columns, beautifully decorated ceilings, and famous artwork depicting the sky goddess Nut. It is a peaceful place to explore ancient Egyptian religion and art, away from busy tourist spots, and worth a visit for history and architecture enthusiasts.

– Temple of the Birth of Isis:

Behind the Temple of Hathor is a temple commemorating the birth of Isis. Its preserved parts, incorporating reused Ptolemaic blocks, date from the time of Augustus.

– The Sacred Lake:

Is a cool spot next to the Hathor Temple. It used to be a place where priests would do their morning rituals and take baths. Now, it’s all dried up and has a bunch of palm trees growing in it.
