The unique belfry reflects cultural influences, and the church remains an active place of worship and a center for Coptic history.

Synagogue Ben Ezra

The Ben Ezra Synagogue, located in the winding streets of Coptic Cairo, is the oldest Jewish temple in the city, dating back to the 9th century. While it primarily serves as a tourist attraction today, following the departure of most of Egypt’s Jewish community in the 1950s, it remains significant to the history of Judaism.

The Cave Church

The Fortress of Babylon

Babylon Fortress, or Qasr el-Shamaa, is an ancient Roman castle in Coptic Cairo, Egypt, built around 30 BC by Emperor Augustus. Its well-preserved towers and walls offer a glimpse into ancient history, making it an exciting place to explore.

Al-Rifa’i Mosque

Constructed in the 19th century to compete with the al-Sultan Hassan mosque. The building is named after the tomb of Ali, a grandson of Sufi founder Ahmad al-Rifa’i, not buried there. The mosque features intricately decorated walls and elegant minarets, and it was the first Islamic monument in Egypt use cement. It includes areas for prayer and houses the tombs of notable figures, such as Khedive Ismail and Muhammad Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran.

The Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hasan

built in the 14th century by Sultan Hasan ibn al-Nasir Muhammad, is one of Egypt’s largest mosques. It features an open courtyard with a fountain, four wings for Islamic education, and two Mamluk-style minarets. Historically, it was a fortress near the citadel. It is recognized for its ornate domes and intricate decorations and has been renovated several times.

Amr Ibn Al-As Mosque

The Mosque of ‘Amr ibn al-‘As, founded in 640 AD by General ‘Amr ibn al-‘As, is the oldest surviving mosque in Egypt and Africa. Located in Fustat, the first Islamic capital, it served as a gathering place for early Muslims. Although many companions of Prophet Muhammad helped build it, the mosque has been extensively renovated over time, with a twentieth-century reconstruction that still reflects early Islamic architectural modesty.
